If you need something that works without batteries or gas, a spring pistol fills that gap. The HFC M9 is a budget option in this category. It runs on a manual spring mechanism—rack the slide before each shot, pull the trigger, and you get one shot. At 205-220 FPS on 0.20g BBs, it's not a skirmish gun. This is for backyard plinking, dry-fire training, or a prop that looks right on camera.

The build. The frame is 8.75 inches and weighs 0.85 pounds, so it's light enough to carry without it feeling heavy. The entire gun is polymer—slide, frame, outer barrel, grip panels, and magazine. Metal springs and mechanical linkages run the internals, but there's no metal receiver or external metal parts to add weight. If you want a realistic heft or feel, this isn't it. If you want something simple and cheap that fires consistently, it works.

The trade-offs. Single-shot only. You rack the slide, fire, rack again. There's no semi-auto, no full-auto, no blowback. The magazine holds 12 rounds, and you'll be reloading often. At this velocity, you're looking at effective range under 50 feet with any consistency. Beyond that, the hop-up can't stabilize the BB enough to hit a target reliably.

Upgrades and support. This uses a proprietary layout, so there's no aftermarket parts. You can't swap springs, upgrade the hop-up, or install a MOSFET. What you have is what you get. When it wears out, you replace it.

Before you buy. You'll need to supply your own BBs—0.20g is the standard for this velocity. Battery and charger aren't included because there's no battery to charge. If you want a sidearm for actual field use, look at a gas blowback M9 instead. This is a plinker, a prop, or a backup for when you don't want to deal with gas or batteries.

Includes federally mandated blaze orange muzzle tip.
