Gearbox shims are one of those boring-looking upgrades that actually matters. They set the vertical clearance between the gears in your AEG gearbox so each gear meshes cleanly with its neighbor without rubbing the shell. Bad shimming is the single most common cause of a gearbox that whines under load, and a well-shimmed box is quieter, lasts longer, and runs more consistently.

What's in the set. This is a shim set from Lancer Tactical's X-Mod line, a collection of precision-cut shims in multiple thicknesses. You stack different thicknesses to dial in the exact clearance each gear position calls for. How you arrange them depends on your gearbox layout.

Compatibility. These are designed as a universal fit across most standard AEG gearbox versions, including the V2 (M4/M16/MP5/G3 platforms) and V3 (AK/G36/AUG) shells. If your gearbox uses standard flat shims rather than a proprietary design, these will work. Tokyo Marui-style gearboxes are the compatibility baseline for the hobby.

When you actually need them. If your gearbox is already running smoothly, quiet, and consistent, you don't need to open it just to shim it. But if you've got a whining sound, a gearbox that's been stroked by a heavy spring, or you're doing a full rebuild, good shims are worth the effort. The set also makes sense if you've been running with generic or worn-out shims and want something with tighter tolerances.

Building the AEG kit right. Lancer Tactical's X-Mod line is their performance tier. These are cut to match the Tokyo Marui standard, which is where most aftermarket parts in the hobby are keyed.

Before you buy. You'll need a basic gearbox tool set to open the gun and a shim stock reference or manual for the recommended thickness per gear position. Shimming is hand work — there's no shortcut around it — and it helps to work clean so grit doesn't end up between gears. If you're not comfortable splitting your gearbox, a local tech can do this in under ten minutes.
