Pump-action CO2 shotguns have always been a compromise. Green gas shotguns lose power when the weather turns cold and demand a fill after every pump. Spring shotguns force you to wrestle with the forend each shot while everyone else is still shooting. The M8870 sidesteps both problems.

How the 3/6 shot selector works. Inside the chamber is a lever that switches between 3 and 6 rounds per trigger pull. In 3-shot mode the firing pin strikes three pellets per pull — tight enough for controlled engagements. Flip it to 6-shot and the shell fires twice as fast, burning through those 30 rounds in half the pumps. That's five pumps to empty the shell in 3-shot, two and a half in 6-shot. It matters when you're stepping a doorway and aren't sure how many targets are on the other side. You don't reload after one shot, but you also aren't carrying an extra shell in your pocket.

CO2 makes this work. The 12-gram cartridges tucked into the magazine tube provide shot-to-shot consistency that spring shotguns simply can't match and that green gas loses its nerve in anything below about 50°F. Each trigger pull fires the shell, so you're really counting trigger pulls, not pumps. A single cartridge will run a full 30-round shell in 3-shot mode and still have enough left for a second in 6-shot before it dies. That trades to roughly one cartridge per 30-shell load in 3-shot, or half a cartridge per load in 6-shot. The trade-off is ongoing cost: 12-gram cartridges aren't cheap, and the gas is wasted a little with every pump stroke even when you're not pulling the trigger.

Velocity and role. Rated 260–300 FPS on 0.20g BBs. That clears indoor field limits comfortably and sits inside every CQB cap. Shotgun engagements at that speed are about getting there first at close range, not trading at distance. With the ghost ring iron sights it's a tight-spread weapon out to about 30 feet and still useful out to 50 on open CQB lanes. This is a CQB gun. If your field has a 350 FPS outdoor cap, you're already below it.

What it's built from. Metal receiver, outer barrel, magazine tube, top rail, and forend. At four pounds it carries the weight of a full-size shotgun and feels like one when you pump. The top rail accepts red dots or low-power scopes if you want to go that route, though the ghost rings are genuinely good for shotgun distances — wide circle, fast target acquisition, nothing to zero. Overall length is 37.75 inches with a 315mm barrel. Not an SBR, but manageable in CQB and fine for outdoor skirmish where shotgun rules apply.

Before you buy. Shotgun shells and 12-gram CO2 cartridges are the consumables. You'll burn through cartridges fast in a game — plan on carrying four or more for a full day. This is a full-size shotgun, so if your milsim role calls for something compact or your games are played in spaces tighter than a warehouse, it may be long for you. Not a bad problem to have — it's a real shotgun, not a PDW.

Includes federally mandated blaze orange muzzle tip.
